Illuminated Text
A project by one or more students (and some examples by teachers) that uses Power Point to explicate a text, making it come alive through animation, effects, and music in a way that shows an understanding of the text as well as giving the audience (other students and the teacher) a new way to look at that text.
An Introduction to Illuminated Texts - A Screencast
This is the first in what I hope to be a long series of screencasts to help teachers and their students with the creation of Illuminated Texts. This video introduces the concepts of Illuminated Texts - shows and describes two of them - and gives an explanation of The Illuminated Text Learning Center. If you've ever wanted to know just what an Illuminated Text is - or if you want to hear a little history behind their inception, this would be a good video to watch. The presentation last about 10 minutes. Read more »
An Illuminated Text of "Spring and Fall To a Young Child" by Gerard Manley Hopkins
This poem was one of my favorite poems of the year. In this illustration you are taken through the motions of a young child filled with innocence grieving over a change in season. It touches my heart to the see the change that takes place as I mature into a young adult and to see that such small things do not sadden me anymore.
An Illuminated Text of Blake's "The Tyger"
The Tyger contemplates how the creation of the animal came to be but specifically how its divine creator reacted at seeing his creation. In my illuminated text I wanted to emphasize the presence of the tyger throughout the whole presentation so I choose an orange shade as the background while keeping the text black to represent the stripes. At one point in the illuminated text there’s a pair of hands to demonstrate the creator’s presence as William Blake questions how the tyger could be completed.
Ode on a Grecian Urn
This is an illuminated text on John Keats poem Ode on a Grecian Urn. Through this illuminated text I tried to bring out the important parts of the poems with animated pictures. I hope it helps to understand this great poem. All we need to know is " beauty is truth, truth beauty." [An incredible Illuminated Text - what makes it more impressive is that this was an end of the year, extra credit project and the student only had about two weeks to complete it. It is very well done. JRS]
Introspection: An Illuminated Text of Hopkins's Spring and Fall
This illuminated text uses a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. I so far haven't seen one yet, so I believe that this one is original. It is an illuminated text on Spring and Fall to a Young Child by Gerard Manley Hopkins. That poem seemed like a letter, or a direct conversation, because of the starting word. So I made the entire illuminated text seem like a flowing letter. "Margaret," in the middle, emphasizes to whom this is talking to.
Mark of the Beast
This is the Flash that I made with my partner Jenna Rollze. This describe the nature and the animal in there. The wolf's loneliness with the nature. It is hard to really understand the animals, afterall we are not in thier shoes. This is on Kipling's story of the same name that we listened to in class.
Carpe Diem: An Illuminated Text of Herrick's To The Virgins to Make Much of Time
This is an illuminated text about Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). A lot of people waste their time, it is very important to seize the day. Life is only so long, we should spend every moment to its best and take hold of every opportunity. I felt that this is a good way to end the school year for British Literature. There were many activities and things that we did this year that gave me inspiration and motivation to take every moment in life that belongs to me. Every smile and every experience is a new page in my adventure book. No one knows what will happen tomorrow, but we can enjoy today.

Dreams A Aaron Lichamer/Mimi Liu Per. 8
This is the first minute of the dreams section. I'd of incorporated the other half onto this but I've been unable to open the other FLA on my computer for some reason (keeps giving me the Unexpected file format error even though both pairs of partners are working with CS3). We opted for a more art oriented animation style. We wouldve pushed flash a bit more on this project but we couldnt find a smooth way to animate the eye close. sorry its a bit late, but i was trying to get the other half of the presentation under the same thing
Birds A&B Cheyanne Flowers (8), Cheuk Law(8), Hui Mei Yu (8), Raymond Li (8)
This is the illuminated text of the theme "birds" for the illuminated text based on the book Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. A variety of quotes were brought together as one to recreate the idea of birds. We wanted to make use of the Redd or Debb font as best it could, and animated the words themselves in hopes of making them look like flying birds. We also used colors for representation of the peacock. Two minutes is included here.
Roots/Trees/Pilate Part A Agustin Bernal
This is part A of the Roots trees pilate and i used cs5 and saved it as that seeing that it is compatible with older versions as well. We thought this illuminated text did a good job of displaying the carefree manner in which milate was singing in normally more solemn situations.
Roots, Trees, Pilate Frank Yi (8) & Zachary Yin (5)
Here is part B of Roots/Trees/Pilate part. We used CS3 to make this. We thought the animation and different coloring of "Roots" and "Baby" as brown and green, respectively gave off an effect of Pilate really springing from the ground (brown) and growing into a tree starting from a baby (green).
Flight A&B - Norman Xu (6), Jessica Ou (6), Raymond Kwong (6), Matthew Yung (6)
This is our final two minute version of our illuminated text of "Flight". This is part A and B put together already. Our theme was flight. I could not find the music so it is without music right now. We will fix it as soon as we find the music.
Milkman and Soloman Samantha Kania (5) Elyse Dillon (5)
This illuminate text illustrates the connection between Soloman and Milkman. The plight of flight is also demonstrated through this illuminate text. Elyse and Samantha tried to incorporate quotes from the book into the illuminate text in order to portray the book in a more specific way. The diction of the quotes helps viewers connect to the characters more because they can imagine the words being spoken.
