 So we begin by doing a close reading of the first few pages - looking specifically for targets of satire.  And boy do we find some.  Next, we talk about what happens in those first few pages (Chapter 1), and we end by talking about Dr. Pangloss - his philosophy, and we each come up with our own absurd statement about "living in the best of all possible worlds."

There is so much to fit into this final discussion that it is hard to get them all in.  From Count Pocorante, the man who despises everything, to the Baron again rejecting Candide's bid for his sister's hand ("lets throw him into the sea").  Most of all though, there is that all important visit to the Dervish and the man with the successful farm.  We must all work at what we do best -- and in this way -- we will all get somewhere.

 It seems like a lot of Chapters to cover - but they are very small chapters.  So we discuss Candide getting put into the army, the idea of "free will," and the incredible irony of they people that help him when he gets to Holland being the people considered by religious leaders of that day as being the most "un-Christian."
