Candide - Opening Discussion - Chapter 1, Satire, and Panglossian Statements 2010

So we begin by doing a close reading of the first few pages - looking specifically for targets of satire.  And boy do we find some.  Next, we talk about what happens in those first few pages (Chapter 1), and we end by talking about Dr. Pangloss - his philosophy, and we each come up with our own absurd statement about "living in the best of all possible worlds."

Working in the Garden: Candide Final Disc Nov 2, 2010

We finish our discussion of the novel Candide.  We talk about what happens when Candide finally catches up with Cundegonde (kind of like a dog finally catching that car he's been chasing).  And we talk about how in the midst of all of their talk they learn the incredible lesson that the only thing to do, after all, is to work in one's garden - to do what we do best - and to do it well.

Candide - A Class Discussion Part 4 - Killing the Baron and El Dorado

We discuss everything in class from Candide killing his brother (all that stuff about quarterings), his and Cacambo's escape, the encounter with the Oreillions (not to mention the monkeys) and finally a good deal of our time is spent talking about El Dorado and why anyone would possibly leave such a perfect land (and why so many of us do time and time again).

Candide - A Class Discussion Part 5 - Martin and the Journey back to the Old World

We talk about Candide and his relationship to Martin (the man he picks as having lived the most miserable life).  We also talk about what happens to Candide once he gets back to the Old World - how he is tricked and whether or not he has betrayed his beloved Cunegonde.

Candide - Chapters 15 - 19 - A Class Discussion 2009

We have a class discussion on Candide that covers from Candide accidentally (ha!) killing his future brother-in-law to his encounter with the Oreillions to his finding El Dorado and then his seemingly unexplainable decision to leave that paradise.  There is a lot of material to cover and some very big ideas here.

Candide - Ch 25 to the end - A Class Discussion 2009

From the impossible to please Count Poccarante to the Whirling Dervish and the discovery that they must work in the garden - we talk about the end of Voltaire's Candide.  I also share a personal story about my own encounter with "working in the garden," and the importance of working as though there might be no tomorrow.

Candide - A Class Discussion Part 2

In this recording, our class discusses Candide Chapters 2-8.  That is a lot of ground to cover: from Candide's induction to the army, his escape to Holland (where he thinks things will get better), his meeting James the Anabaptist (along with a conversation about the irony of him being the one to help him), and what happens on the ship and once they arrive in Lisbon.

Candide - Some Introductory Poems - A Class Discussion - 2010

These poems and this discussion is new for 2010 - the poems are written by Gerard Manley Hopkins, Edgar Allen Poe,  Stevie Smith, Ogden Nash, Edna St. Vincent Milay, Charles Bernstein, John Donne, Freda Dennis Cooper, and a gardening quote by John Evelyn.  All of these are designed to introduce the students to some of the ideas that they will be encountering in Candide.

Candide - Chapters 2-4 - A class discussion

We had very little time and a lot of chapters to cover - so I just cut it down (Chapters 2-4) to what I thought was manageable. Candide's entry and exit from the army - his reception in Holland - and the horrible ship journey that kills James the Anabaptist.

Working in the Garden: Candide - A final discussion.

There is so much to fit into this final discussion that it is hard to get them all in.  From Count Pocorante, the man who despises everything, to the Baron again rejecting Candide's bid for his sister's hand ("lets throw him into the sea").  Most of all though, there is that all important visit to the Dervish and the man with the successful farm.  We must all work at what we do best -- and in this way -- we will all get somewhere.

Candide 2-8 Oct 21, 2010

It seems like a lot of Chapters to cover - but they are very small chapters.  So we discuss Candide getting put into the army, the idea of "free will," and the incredible irony of they people that help him when he gets to Holland being the people considered by religious leaders of that day as being the most "un-Christian."
