The Truth in Grendel--Grendel's Philosophical Journey

Teaching Level:
High School

One of my favorite things to do when I teach this novel is to expose students to all of the -isms that John Gardner sprinkles throughout his novel. The students, however, struggle with these philosophical theories, so I find that breaking these theories down using this assignment helps them understand and follow Grendel's philosophical journey as he constantly debates what is "true" in his world.

Grendel's Death - An Illuminated Text

Our Illuminated text illuminates the last chapter of Grendel, a novel by John Gardner, which we chose because it is the moment where the book is tied together and the ideas are all connected.

Love of Lost Longings: An Illuminated Text on "Wulf and Eadwacer"

This Illuminated Text explores the pleasure and sorrow that a love forbidden has come to know of woman ( Eadwacer ) and man ( Wulf ). Emphasis is shown throughout the poignant text as a way of getting the audience to feel sad and serene as their love for each once was. Undoubtedly, the consistent piano melody strung about helps to achieve this idea as well. Vadim Chaimovich performed the Ballade no 4 op. 52. The composer of this heartfelt piece is by pianist Frederic Francios Chopin.

My Hunger...: An Illuminated Text of "Grendel"

This is an illuminated text focused on the character Grendel's resentment towards the mechanical nature of the universe around him, as well as his hunger...

Hunger for food, hunger for knowledge, hunger for answers...

In the beginning of John Gardener's "Grendel", the titular character encounters animals that seem to be of clockwork, only acting on instinct. He expresses his repugnance for such behavior and questions the sky as to why things are the way they are. Receiving no answer, Grendel finds the next best solution - he consumes away his problems.

Nihil ex Nihilo: An Illuminated Text of "Grendel"

This illuminated text is on the book "Grendel," by John Gardner and it focuses on Grendel's destruction of theories rather than his destruction of man and material objects. The theme of "nothingness" follows Grendel's thoughts and actions in the form of words, animations, color, and music. The objective of this illuminated text is to portray Grendel's opinions on the world as well as depict his destruction of man's theories. On multiple counts in the book, he refuses to fit into the mechanical illusion of himself that man has cooked up and he works to destroy what they think will happen.

The World is my Bone Cave: An Illuminated Text of Grendel's Last Moments

This Illuminated Text describes Grendel’s last moments alive (page 170). Grendel reflects on his views of the world in a romantic view of life as well as mocks the 23 pslam and echoes the dragon's words.
The original music was meant to portray the darkness and chaos of the scene. The heavy emotion of his dying soul is encompassesed by the eerie tones of the the viola with the haunting echo of the violin and sitar.

Hero: An Illuminated Text of "Grendel"

"Hero: An Illuminated Text of Grendel" seeks to bring us, as humans, closer to Grendel, who is often depicted as a monster or a feral beast. This Illuminated Text uses specific evidence from the book by John Gardner coupled with the new single "A Real Hero" by College, featuring Electric Youth to disseminate a better understanding of Grendel as a human and a hero.

Grendel and the Dragon: An Illuminated Text by Gordon Bentley

My Illuminated text details the first part of Grendel meeting the Dragon, and has to do with Grendels ideals that the world is accidental. This part of the meeting with the dragon doesn't delve deeply into the philosophical, but stays material and realistic, which also goes with Grendels beliefs, and ultimately ends with the Dragon recommending Grendel to just get gold and sit on it, and to not worry about humans or things that seem impractical.

Monster + Intelligent Creature: An Illuminated Text of “Grendel”

We chose this text because the book Grendel really let us view the Beowulf story through a new set of eyes. We wanted to explore this new perception with more depth so we chose to do our illuminated text about this subject.

A Meaningless Swirl- a Grendel Illuminated text

In the novel Grendel, a monster with the mind of a teenager attempts to comprehend the aggressive and dangerous world around him. He concludes that the entire world is mechanical, like the bull who attacks him, but his ideas are changed by the poetry of the shaper. The shaper's poems sing of great heroes and spread the message of living for idealistic purposes. However, the dragon, who knows all that will or has happened, states that life is simply meaningless and that there is no point in doing anything. The nihilistic ideals of the dragon clash with the heroic ideals of the shaper.

The Dragon's Illusion: An Illuminated Text of Grendel

This is an Illuminated text of the dragon in chapter five of Grendel. I chose this because in Grendel the dragon is the self-proclaimed greatest creature in the book. This Illuminated text shows how great the beast is in terms of his intelligence versus Grendel, the humans and anything else he considers a low creature. It also shows new perspectives on the dragon’s thoughts about others and the dragon itself. When you leave this Illuminated text you will ultimately have a new perspective on the “great dragon” of Grendel.

Discussion Assignments for Grendel

Teaching Level:
High School

These Power Point Presentations can be used to divide a class up in order to facilitate discussion.  The reading sections are divided by rows and gives instructions to the students - they are to find three things - a combination of comments, questions, and a quote - in 5 to 7 minutes.  You would then go around the room - each student giving one of the 3 things that they came up with as a starting point for discussion.  It works really well.

After finishing Grendel

I finished Grendel last week and have been pondering what I think and how I will help my students as they read. I believe, after reading Gardner's letter that the dragon is evil, and Gardner is illustrating how one can go amuck by following this philosophy. It is after the visit with the dragon that Grendel really becomes a monster. I also believe that the novel is a journey in quest of identity-Who am I? What do I want to believe? I know my students are going to have a difficult time with it, but it will be good for them to really have to think and delve. Read more »
