Shakespeare in Love - A Movie Question and Essays to take Notes On

Teaching Level:
High School

This three page handout is designed to accompany the film Shakespeare in Love.  In my class's case - they have just finished workshopping Stoppard's Arcadia - he also cowrote the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love - and the film serves as a wonderful follow-up to that play, and indeed for the entire year.  There are six potential topics that the students are given in the handout and told to take notes on while they watch the movie.  There is only one real Movie Question - in the traditional sense of what you may find on this site.

In our text Leo exploring what is real and what he is imagining. He is coming to term with the fact that most of the things he he sees are imaginary. Our text all discusses how Alma adores Leo and for her he would do anything.

Shakespeare in Love and Arcadia (Scotese Required Forum)

Tom Stoppard co-wrote the screenplay to the movie Shakespeare in Love.  What (specific) connections do you see between the two works.  For those of you in Mr. Scotese's class - start with the souvenir mug that you see in the beginning of the film.  Remember, a connection may be something simliar that Stoppard is trying to say in both of these works.

Arcadia Day 5 Scene 7 Pt 1 Listening and Discussion LA Theater Works Production Per A Audio May 27, 2011

We only have 30 minutes for the class today - so I decided it would be a good time for the students to listen to a professional production of the play.  We don't stop the recording as much as we do our own discussion (to ask questions and to point things out) - and the students follow along with their scripts.  We get about 10 pages into Scene 7 - and we learn about the fate of Mr. Chater - where some Dahlia plants came from - and that our time with Thomasina is very short.  This is the Period A recording of our listening/discussion.

Arcadia Day 4 Act 2 Scenes 5 and 6 - A Class Reading - Per B May 26, 2011

These scenes seem to start off slow - but the payoff here is incredible.  Again, we learn more about the mysteries surrounding the "duel with Byron" and the hermit of Sidley Park - a lot of "ohhhh" moments with the students.  Such a wonder to see in the classroom as various students get - without being told - the secrets that Stoppard reveals to us slowly.  Also much more on the Second Law of Thermodynamics, the fate of Mr. Chater, and how nothing is ever really lost.

Arcadia - Act Two

A forum for discussion of the second act of Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia", meant to stop the main forum from having spoilers.  If you have a question, comment, or idea about anything that takes place after (or you want to mention anything that takes place after) Act I - post it here. Please do not talk about the very ending of the play - you'll give too much away - instead  go to the Forum for the ending of the play.

Arcadia Day 3 Finish Act 1 - A Class Reading - Per B May 25, 2011 21
