Euthanasia in Of Mice and Men

Teaching Level:
High School

This is another lesson for Of Mice and Men based on theme. (Can you tell I'm in the middle of a unit?) This lesson pertains to the euthanasia that occurs in the novel, and is actually two lessons that will occur at different times. The first page of the handout is meant to introduce the topic of euthanasia when Candy's dog gets put down in chapter 3. For this part of the lesson, I introduce the term euthanasia. Then I ask students to form an opinion about Candy's dog being euthanized.

Dreams and Aspirations in Of Mice and Men

Teaching Level:
High School

I do a lot of work with ELL students, so graphic organizers are kind of my thing. This one pertains to the theme of dreams in Of Mice and Men. Several of the characters in the story have dreams about a better future or a different life for themselves, and this handout is designed to help students organize the different dreams. There is also a blank for students to write about their own dreams in order to connect more with the text. Generally I use this organizer throughout the novel and write down dreams as we come to them.

Setting of Of Mice and Men

Teaching Level:
High School

This lesson and handout work well with the first chapter of Of Mice and Men. Another sheet you might create to go with this lesson would be a character sheet to help students keep track of the characters as they are introduced. There are a lot of important locations in this story.

This sheet serves to help students organize the locations and it gives them a visual of what part of California the characters are in. As you read together the first chapter of the novel, stop periodically as the locations are discussed and take notes on the organizer.

Thematic Statements of Of Mice and Men

Teaching Level:
High School

I use this lesson as an intro to the study of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. I developed a list of thematic statements that relate to some of the themes within the novel. I give students the list of statements and a few minutes to decide if they "agree" or "disagree." The idea is for the statements to be difficult to decide one way or another so that students will be able to discuss their reasoning for choosing either "agree" or "disagree." I have students share their opinions on each statement before diving into the novel.

Of Mice and Men ch4 Poetry Connection

Teaching Level:
High School

After reading chapter 4 of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, students will read, critically analyze, and synthesize ideas between the novel and poetry of Langston Hughes ("Dreams" and "A Dream Deferred"). This assignment will ask students to analyze poetry for literary devices such as simile, metaphor, and tone. Students will connect the themes of both poems to the themes so far in the novella Of Mice and Men.

Introduction to The Grapes of Wrath (play adaptation by Frank Galati)

Teaching Level:
High School

I am teaching Frank Galati's adaptation of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.  It is a choice I've had to make because of time, but one I'm very glad to have as the play is wonderful.  In order to introduce the students to the experiences that the Joad family has throughout the play, I created an Animoto movie.  I paired the images/photographs and quotes that I found with Bruce Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad."  The majority of images are Dorothea Lange's photographs.

Characterization in Grapes of Wrath

Teaching Level:

This lesson will support students in their analysis of characters in The Grapes of Wrath.  Once students have read chapter 10, they should be able to begin the project.
1.  Break students up in small groups of 3-4 students and either assign or let them choose one of the characters who has been described in more detail during the first 10 chapters (Tom Joad, Pa Joad, Ma Joad, Muley Graves, Jim Casy, Grampa Joad, Al Joad, Rose of Sharon, etc. )

Of Mice and Men Group Work

Teaching Level:
High School

a cover from Of Mice and MenI borrowed and modified Mr. Scotese's Group Work for The House on Mango Street for use with my students, and it worked so well that I decided to do something similar for our study of Of Mice and Men. There are two Group Work assignments - one for Chapter 2, and another for Chapter 4. Each assignment is broken down so seven groups each look at a different issue in that section of the text, and the assignment also includes guidance for assigning group roles and a rubric for assessing the presentation.
