Illuminating Our Time - An Illuminated Text project on Hemingway's In Our Time

Teaching Level:
High School

This is the handout that I give my students for their In Our Time, Illuminated Text project.  It has been heavily revised over the years (now I allow - even encourage Power Point Illuminated Texts).  It also assumes that the students have done at least one other Illuminated Text project.  Still, there are some useful tips and parameters that could be adapted to most any other text.

Illuminated Text follow-up handout

Teaching Level:
High School

After my students complete their first illuminated texts, I find it helpful to have them reflect on the outcome of their project.  In past years, I've asked them to write a couple of paragraphs explaining their animation and music choices.  This year, I will have them complete the attached handout (.doc and .pdf formats) which, I hope, will encourage more focused answers.

Illuminated Text "Getting Started" guidelines

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a one page handout that encourages students to focus on what is important when creating an illuminated text.  The instructions emphasize that the goal, rather than technical complexity, is paramount.  The "4 things that drive the animation" could be used as the basis for part of a grading rubric.

General questions that you need help with

If you have a question about how to do something in Power Point (as far as creating an Illuminated Text goes) post it here.  Make sure you look for more specific topics in the Power Point section first.

Embedding sound in Powerpoint

Has anyone successfully embedded a sound file in a Powerpoint presentation?  Normally, you can only embed .wav files, but this results in a huge file.  I just uploaded a Powerpoint illuminated text with embedded fonts and music.  I took an .mp3 file (much smaller than a .wav) and used a combination of Audacity and CDex freeware to "fool" Powerpoint into thinking it was a .wav file. Converting Powerpoint to Flash and Video

If you have a question about converting Power Point into something more web friendly like Flash or another Video format - post your comment here.

How do we have the whole thing play without pressing anything?

How do we have the power point go automatically without pressing the enter button everytime you want a new action to happen or to go to the next slide?

Itunes, mp3's and adding them to Power Point
