This is a class reading and discussion of poems that are related to Toni Morrison's novel, Song of Solomon. Song of Solomon - Chapters 1 and 2 - A Class Discussion - 2011

We have a class discussion about the first two chapters of Toni Morrison's book (after page 15) - how Milkman get's his name - his bad habit of not looking backward, and his first meeting with Pilate.  We also begin to discover his father's obsession with owning things and even (thanks Morgan) begin to connect that to what happened when Macon was 12.

Song of Solomon - Chapts 13 to 15 - A final discussion

We talk about what Milkman learns - how he has grown.  We also talk about the tragic end of Hagar - and how Milkman finally takes responsibility for what he has done.  Then we talk about the ending of the book - how anything is possible if Pilate has no navel - and if Mr. Smith indeed tried to fly off of that hospital with his blue wings.

Song of Solomon - Chapters 11 and 12 - A Class Discussion - 2011

In these two chapters Milkman goes to Shalimar - gets in a fight at the General Store (for insulting the locals), almost gets killed by Guitar, hunts a bobcat - and discovers the meaning of a song about a man who flew away.  We attempt in these 35 minutes to try and cover as much ground as possible and the students do a remarkable job.

Song of Solomon - Chapter 5 - A Class Discussion - 2011

Chapter Five is a huge chapter - and we have a lot to get through.  The students have been divided up and we go through each class member who contributes a question, comment, or quote that we then discuss.  This chapter includes Hagar trying to kill Milkman - Ruth trying t save him - A Milkman discovering that his father has been hating his mother all of these years for something that didn't even happen.

Song of Solomon - Chapters 7 and 8 - A Class Discussion 2011

We discuss Chapters 7 and 8 of Song of Solomon - including Milkman talking with his father and later Guitar about the gold that they believe is hanging in the green sack at Pilate's house - how they will get it - and then their actual "heist."

Song of Solomon - Chapt 9 and 10 - A Class Discussion 2011

It is hard to believe that we covered both of these incredible chapters in one class period - but we did - and I think the students did a terrific job.  We talk about about Milkman getting to Danville - then what happens once he gets there - including the climactic scenes at Circe's and at the Cave; of course, in the midst of it all, Milkman begins losing his things.

Song of Solomon - Chapter 6 - Milkman, Guitar and the Seven Days - 2011

As heated a discussion as you can imagine - we talk about The Seven Days - the group that we learn, in Chapter 6, that Guitar belongs to.  I take a number of quotes from that Chapter - and put them up on the projector.  Every year it is interesting to see how students feel about  Guitar's motives.  Later we will watch the film, Four Little Girls by Spike Lee to try and get a little perspectinve on how and why Guitar and his fellow 7 Days feel the way that they do.

The Oral Perspective

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a lesson I put together to get my kids ready for the story telling element in Song of Solomon.  I want them to have the myths and legends she mentions fresh in their minds as we begin reading, as well as to try and help them understand the need for and nature of connecting with a storyteller as a participant in the story.  Additionally, not all of my students are aware of some of the Biblical connections, so this gives them the opportunity to learn a little more about the significance of Pilate and her family.

Song of Solomon - Overtures - A Class Discussion through page 15 - 2011

We begin the class with an overture that plays while they are taking the first quiz - and then we discuss the Chapter.  What part does an overture play in a musical - and how is this opening chapter like that overture?  Next, we discuss whether Mr. Smith committed suicide or tried to jump off of the Mercy Hospital.

Poems before reading Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon

These are poems that we read the day before we begin discussing Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon - the poems include "Failing and Flying" by Jack Gilbert; "Wings" by Mroslav Holub; "A Wreath for Emmett Till" by Marilyn Nelson; "In Flight" by Jennifer Sweeney; "Before you knew you owned it" by Alice Walker, "The Names" by Billy Collins, and an excerpt from The Song of Songs (The Song of Solomon).  The poems are meant to have a critical thinking link with the Morrison's novel.

Birds A&B Cheyanne Flowers (8), Cheuk Law(8), Hui Mei Yu (8), Raymond Li (8)

This is the illuminated text of the theme "birds" for the illuminated text based on the book Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. A variety of quotes were brought together as one to recreate the idea of birds. We wanted to make use of the Redd or Debb font as best it could, and animated the words themselves in hopes of making them look like flying birds. We also used colors for representation of the peacock. Two minutes is included here.

Milkman and Soloman Samantha Kania (5) Elyse Dillon (5)

This illuminate text illustrates the connection between Soloman and Milkman. The plight of flight is also demonstrated through this illuminate text. Elyse and Samantha tried to incorporate quotes from the book into the illuminate text in order to portray the book in a more specific way. The diction of the quotes helps viewers connect to the characters more because they can imagine the words being spoken.

Singing B Amanda Seagle (5) & Lucy Angel (5)

Our one minute illuminated text focuses on the singing theme in Song of Solomon. We put a lot of emphasis in the words Mercy. We kept the background white. In connection with part A of singing we used the lips at the beginning and end of the illuminated text to stay consistent.
