The Heat Oppressed Brain: An Illuminated Text by Christine Lee and Terry Lam

Our main goal in making this illuminated text was to be able to bring Shakespeare's words to life in the dagger scene from Act 2 Scene 1. Terry and I both agreed to do this soliloquy because we felt that this scene was a great representation of the beginning of Macbeth's downfall, as well as his upcoming mental instability. We decided to use a dull color scheme in our presentation because this scene took place at night, and also to portray the dark and twisted thoughts of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

Sonnet 44

In this illuminated text, my focus was to stress how he wished he was though and that with thought he could overcome any distance to be with the one he loved. I used the words and and animation to make sure this point was made and accompanied it with a song called "Across the Stars" from Star Wars which I feel went perfect with this poem because the song gives a sense of "distance."

What I loved best about this song was how the mood changes which I made sure for it to coincide when the poem says that it stinks he isn't thought.

Enjoy (:

An Introduction to Shakespeares Sonnet Per D Dec 1, 2010

This recording details a lecture/discussion on four of Shakespeare's Sonnets.  For the first three - we look at the Sonnets on the projector (and the students on their handouts that I have given them).  The way I have set it up - we reveal one or two lines at a time so we can take it in small steps - and the poems  reveal themselves in a wonderful way.  The final sonnet is a personal take - based on my own experience reading the  poem at my wedding and what that poem means to me.

Four Elizabethan Poems (Donne, Marlowe, Shakespeare) - Period A - Feb 28, 2011

Four poems - two by John Donne, one by Chris Marlowe, one sonnet by Shakespeare.  I put the poems up on the overhead (the Power Point and Handout can be found here).  I give no answers in the discussion - but do ask questions that require that the students think about what is going on in the poem - the actual text.

Sonnets and Villanelles

Teaching Level:
High School

Sonnet and Villanelle Notes: The first page of this document is an explanation of the differences in sonnet forms (Italian/Petrachan, Shakespearean, and Spenserian) and also villanelles. The second page is Sonnet 130 blown up largely so that students can work with me on the differences in stresses, feet, rhyme scheme, stanzas, couplets, etc.

Shakespeare's Sonnets

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a two day lesson teaching Shakespeare's Sonnets 29 & 130 by connecting them to the modern ideas of love described in greeting cards.  Text analysis is focused on and guided by the following questions: What is true love? •How do you express love in a genuine way? •Why is love poetry such a long lived genre? •Can Shakespeare’s sonnets connect to modern life? •Is it possible to write about love without using trite language or clichés?

Six Shakespeare Sonnets (with powerpoint slides)

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a handout of Shakespeare's sonnets 14, 18, 29, 55, 73 and 116 with a right-hand column space for notes.  The .doc version can be edited to remove or add sonnets.  We look at the sonnets line-by-line, an approach that I learned from listening to Joe Scotese's audio on Sonnets (you can find it here).  The PowerPoint slide show allows you to display each sonnet one line at a time and includes a hyperlinked menu so that you can jump to the ones that you want to cover.

Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 and the Objectification of Women in Advertising

Teaching Level:
High School

When teaching Shakespearean sonnets, I have found this lesson has consistantly gone over very well with my 12th grade British Literature classes.  My goal is to introduce the basic elements of English sonnets while helping students discover Shakespeare's timeless expression of life, truth, and beauty.  In the case of Sonnet 130, we focus on Shakespeare's use of parody for making fun of those who exaggerate their loves' beauty.

An Illuminated Text of Sonnet 73

Shakespeare's Sonnet 73 has long been a favorite of mine, but even more as life rushes on.  It expresses such beauty - in aging, in fleeting things - and a love that is strengthened by the very knowledge that time is short.  This was created in PowerPoint and converted to .mp4 (Quicktime) format.
