The 12th Night Acting Circle (First Lesson) Per A Jan 14, 2011

I really believe that Michael Tolaydo's (of the Folger Library Teaching Shakespeare Fame) idea of beginning a play (or any work really) with the acting circle is one of the best possible ways to get the students into a work in a significant way.  We go over a short scene from Act I of Twelfth Night - the students haven't read it coming into the class - and we see how much we can figure out, just from Shakespeare's words - without any outside knowledge.

A Day in the Booth - Stephen Booth, text-centered criticism, and Go Dog Go - 6th Period - 2011

The final day of our literary criticism unit comes in the form of a lecture and presentation by Mr. Scotese - one that is based on the ideas, work, and presentations of Stephen Booth.  Professor Booth postulates that what makes Shakespeare great is not the meaning of the story - but the words that he uses.  This idea can be applied to all works of genius, including a certain children's book by P.D. Eastman.
