AwaytoTeach - Goes Blue & Green - A New Look
Submitted by scotese on Sun, 2010-10-31 07:31
We have a fresh new look at AwaytoTeach - and we'd love to hear your comments. We'd especially like to hear about how the changes have affected finding things and getting around - and if you have any specific constructive suggestions for making things even better, from where to put a menu box, to the use of icons - let us know here. Thanks!

I like the new look. I especially like the recent comments section. However, I still find it a huge amount of information to sort through. I miss the images you had at the top. I really liked that touch and hope you bring it back. It gave the site a special look that I appreciated.
Blue and Green Looks Good!
The colors look good. I am not sure about one thing (and I might have made the same comment about the last change to the format) -- there is a lot on the home page, maybe more than on most home pages, and one has to do some scrolling to see everything on the page. I might (and I do mean "might") be easier to navigate if, there were fewer things on the first page people come to. For example, one could have just the heading "Most Popular Forums" with a link to click on to see the list of those forums, rather than listing them all on the home page, as it might be a little cluttered with so many things. I really am not sure about this, and I know and appreciate how much work goes into creating and maintaining these pages -- thanks!
a full home page
You're right - I wish there was a way to condense things - and I also wish there was a way to bring Blogs (such as your great one) closer to the top - we hope with the new design that people will start noticing things that they may not even have known were here on the site.
screen size
When I made my comment I was looking at the page at home, on my notebook computer, but a day or two later I was looking at this site in my office, which has a considerably larger screen, and that might make a difference -- it might be easier to view with such a screen.
There is another thing though, with both this version and the previous one -- the page seems to take a long time to load, even though (I think) I have a fast connection. I wonder why that is.
page loading time
Page loading time varies a lot - when we made the switch before the cache got filled it was averaging about 7 seconds - now it is about 3 seconds - which given that we are on a shared server is probably about as good as it will get.
web addresses
Another thing that I have noticed -- there seem to be two web addresses -- awaytoteach.com and awaytoteach.net. What is the difference? Is there a difference? I am not sure what determines when I get one or the other.
AwaytoTeach.net versus AwaytoTeach.com
They are just 2 addresses for the same place - they will both get you to this site.
New Stuff
The new format looks really organized and it is easier to navigate. To me it just lost a little bit of its personal touch with the pictures of the students. This website has helped me out so much, so I can't be picky.
Profiles
At first I was a bit confused by the new look, but it definitely doesn't look as cluttered as it did before. There's something wrong with the profiles though. Three things (favorites/forums/quotes, I believe) are right on top of each other.
profiles
Do you have anything entered under favorites/forums/quotes? I think that if you have entries in those fields, the headings will line up fine. Give it a try!
I truly enjoy the new look.
I truly enjoy the new look. Nice job. I guess what I would like to see is, perhaps for newbies, a FAQ that does a step-by-step? Does that make any sense?
wow! What a surprise
As I logged onto my account today I was pleasantly surprised! I love, love, love the new look! It looks fresh and easier to navigate. I kept looking for a forum to post how great it looks and i found it! Great job and I love the change!
a new look
hello!!!!
wow!!! I did not visit this page for a few days and I find out now a new look!
It's excellent! congratulations on the web master who thought and developed this new eye-catching layout!!! I extremely like it!
i'd like to see a lesson plan template, so as to have a gude to develop one class and contribute to your excellent page. I know there is a lesson guidelines, but i'm not sure whether I'm doing it properly or not.
thanks for this space for sharing and learning more about literature....
lesson plan
There is really no specific "template" for lessons, as each teacher's lessons tend to be unique. If your lesson includes handouts, enter it under "Submit a Lesson" in the "Educators" block (left column, chalkboard icon). Each lesson is reviewed and awarded up to 50 points (based on depth/completeness, not merit). If your lesson is a description with no handouts then enter it as a comment (2 points) under the appropriate forum.
