A Pilgrimage - A Geocaching Activity for Chaucer's Canterbury Tales

High School

an illustration of Chaucer along with the international geocaching logoStudents make pilgrims in class.  Then the pilgrims are hidden in different locations around the campus.  Coordinates are pre-loaded into GPS units and in each cache, students find a clue that they must write down.  When they return to class, they must complete a quiz using the clues found in the cache.  [What a fun and incredibly creative lesson - a unique and appropriate use of technology.  JRS]

Just wanted to echo the previous poster's comment: How do you prevent the other students from seeing the clues?

Great idea! Just a couple of questions. Do you send students out in groups? How do you prevent them from seeing where someone else is finding a clue? Thanks!

The groups all start out at different locations on the campus and unless they cross paths (our school takes up almost 2 city blocks) they won't have the opportunity to share.  I monitor as much as I can while walking to the different locations.  Usually, they are so busy, they don't think about sharing!
