a man and horse both with gas masksThis cooperative close-reading exercise is designed to try and replicate what usually happens during one of our class discussions.  In chapter 4, there is a remarkable repetition of two very similar images.  Part of the group work is designed to have students discover those two images and then to look at how the ideas of these images are replicated in this and other chapters. My students know that I don't believe in "symbols" as they are typically used in the Language Arts classroom - but I do believe that certain words, images, themes, are repeated throughout a work to give greater significance to what is taking place.
