Teaching Level:
High School

a woodcut illustration of Hestor and Pearl from The Scarlet LetterFor this unit of study, students practice effective discussion techniques using the “fishbowl” strategy with a focus on characterization/symbolism in the Scarlet Letter. Students are given three weeks to read the text, along with instructions for what they should before reading and during reading. On the day the book is due read, students are given a short reading test to make sure that they read, and have to turn in an Anticipation Guide.

Thank you very much for the pre, during and post reading strategies. I am once again returning to The Scarlet Letter and I was looking for some fresh, new approaches and I really like the hands-on character discussions and the research elements of this piece. Thank you for sharing.

The statements and questions in the anticipation guide were really helpful for my classroom.
