L.H.P.
I really like this quote, and it directly correlates with one of my personal policies in my classroom. I really want my students to learn about all of the wonders of English, but I quickly tire from late work, lack of responsibility, and overall absence of them taking their life into their own hands. Often times, late work can be a full time job. This inspired the L.H.P.
This is a Life Happens Pass. Most of my students get one LHP per quarter to use however they choose. I explain to them that if they are going to CHOOSE to do their work, it should be done on time. But life happens sometimes. When it does, they have an LHP. This means they can do the missing assignment, turn it in late, and receive no penalty.
This has helped my students make wise decisions while teaching them to be responsible. They learn to roll with the punches when something does happen, and my hope is that they will develop a life-long mentality of 'when life rains on your parade...break out the slip-n-slide'. :)
