Mercy: An Illluminated Text of John Gardner's Grendel

WealhtheowThis presentation by Izat Mir and Jason Weng seems to begin innocently enough - the background image is pastoral and Grendel is sparring with the ram.  But as the Illuminated Text continues - a theme - a focus builds.  First Grendel goes to the Mead Hall to seek friendship - and he is attacked.  He cries for "Mercy."  Then he sees the same injustice being thrust upon Wealhtheow - and he again asks those around him for "mercy."  The authors of this Illuminated Text do a terrific job of making a point and building their support throughout the presentation.  Please remember, as this is a Power Point Illuminated Text, to hear the sound you must use Internet Explorer as your browser and choose to Open rather than to Save when you click on the link below.

I liked this illuminated text

I liked this illuminated text because the authors were able to potray or display the meaning of their words effectively, within the poem. Some words were colored or some had distorted speed that definitley helped the viewer understand the authors message.Sometimes most of the words would vanish completely and one would remain, showing the signifigance of that word. I believe they did a fine job of showing how the words related to grendel.

This illuminated text works

This illuminated text works well because its creators placed emphasis on certain words that supported their reasoning. The speed of some of the important words showed the mood, so to speak of the word (i.e. the word Scat came fast into the PowerPoint and showed the haste intended to be made). The lingering of some words explained that those words were to make a lasting effect on the audience; words to be marinated. They also highlighted words in midst of the texts which show the importance of the words in relation, once again, to their response to Grendel. It was successfully made.

This illuminated text was well done by the two creators. His effect of how he brought the words out into the slide presentation put an emphasis on the text. My favorite slide was the one with the battle axes and grendel begging for mercy. The words made it seem like a battle field.
