Group Work on the history of the Anglo-Saxons.

a picture of the Sutton Hoo maskThis group work, optimized for 3-4 students, has the students explore the specific history of the Anglo-Saxon people, in preparation for a closer understanding of the texts that they will read.  It also, in turn, requires that they closely examine the historical background text in order to answer the questions.  It also sets up a create writing exercise that has students write about the "Last Anglo-Saxon."  A newly revised (2012) version of this assignment can be found below.

Anglo-Saxon Background and my textbook

The textbook that I use is Elements of Literature -- but the assignment could be easily altered to take any textbook's historical introducation into account.

Could you please share the parameters and directions that you give to the timekeepers?

Group Work and Timekeepers

From our first group work on, I usually tell groups to 1) always select a timekeeper  2) give them a few minutes while group starts to look through the questions and estimate (based on the question) where (timewise) a group should be by a given time -- on some groupworks I put the amount of time that a question should take (it isn't written in stone, though).  3) it is the timekeepers job to make sure the group stays on track to finish by the end of the period (50 minutes here).

Hope that helps!
