"i carry your heart" by e e cummings - An Illuminated Text in Flash
This is the second Illuminated Text that I have created using this poem. As my students transition from Power Point to Adobe Flash -- I wanted to go through the process and acquaint myself with what they were going through for myself. I chose this poem because I love it dearly- and, to me, it is an ideal candidate for a text-based animation -- the words are rich, beautiful, and multi-layered. When I was writing this Illuminated Text - it occurred to me how much these presentations are like essays or writing in general - you need to have some kind of overriding idea or thesis and each piece must support and play off of the other.

I loved this illuminated text! It was so creative. The sounds effects and the different animations, such as the tree, really brought the text to life. I was engaged in it the whole time wonder what was coming next. I have never read this e e cummings text but I felt that I had with the way that the text was captured.
I thought this illuminated text was great. It did keep me interested the entire time with all the movement of animation of the words and letters. It seemed like the creator of this text really understood the concept because the animations matched what the text said. For example, the word heart was in red and started beating like a heart would. Also the word root hanging vertically like roots do and coming up to form a tree. This one was similar to a movie preview and urges the audience to put together the illuminated text with the story that matches up. A well done piece of work that gave me some more ideas for my own illuminated text.
When i was watching this illuminated text I thought it was very creative when the words were used to make a tree, the top beinf in green and the bottom words looking lik roots and also the color brown. I also thought it was nice how at the end the letters of the words scattered around and were made into stars.
I thought this was a very well made illuminated text. i think my favorite part of the whole story is the significance of the heart. you made the heart red because hearts are generally red. You made the heart beat because that is what a real heart does. you made the heart carry because the heart carries human life. i thought this was an amazing presentation.

I looked the way this Illuminated Text used color to explay emotions. The most evident example was how heart and you were both written in red when displayed. This shows how strong the love was for the person you was representing. Also, color helped show emotion as seen with the words tree, sun, and life.
This was SOOO cute. I love how the heart beats noise was in the beginning and how you made the sky look like a sky and the stars. This was really amazing. All the words were emphasized. I loved it. I can't believe how wonderful this presentation is. The tree and roots was really creative. Picking the font for life, it actually looked like tree leaves! I am very impressed. Way to go. Way to be. (: love vicky
I love how it starts up with the sound of a heart beating...Boom boom..boom boom. It is called "I carry your heart" for a reason. I also liked how the word "you" was always bold and red which always drew my attention towards the idea that the "you " person was mighty important, the love, the world in all it's beauty. One of the things I found interesting is how Mr.Scotese was able to connect the literal with his animations subtly. For example the tree and how it grew or the stars and how the words became those stars at the end.I find these simple details to be of much help when it comes to finding deeper meaning to the reading.
I liked how one word would morph into another. It was nice to see the link between the words and how every word had a significance. For example, the word "life" and "tree" created a tree that just kept growing and growing, like we do in our lives. I also liked how every letter of the last part became a star. This supports my comment that everything had a significance no matter how small.
I really liked how the pace of the music matched the movement of the words. I also really liked how you morphed certain words into other words like you into fate. My favorite part of this illuminated text was the way you showed each action, like you showed carry by having the "I" underneath other words and pushing them up.
I like how there is real emphasis on togetherness. The pairing of words really shows that with the you and i, i and it, you and me, my and your, you and fate. There is a strong showing of the idea of closeness which is boosted by the you turning into fate and the world turning into you.
the main thing i liked about this illuminated text is the way it creates figures that represent the words stated. the main idea flowing through the illuminated text is the love between to people. the close relationship someone can have with another. i liked the highlighted usage in the important words and the creations they were used in, both when they are stars and when they other shapes.
I found this illuminated text simply amazing. The techniques in which you used to make the heart beat at the very beginning drew my attention to the words. It brought the text to life and allowed me to connect in a personal way. The music in the background created a serene feeling and sets the mood. I felt the passion of the words by them being accompanied by this music. I was wondering how you rotate the words and made it form in a tree. That was a really brilliant idea and the effect of it growing adds more to the text. This illuminated text had a lot of movement and I can picture it having to do with love. Love isn't just one constant flowing motion. Love is a roller coaster with jerks and turns.; sort of like he movement of the text.
This illuminated text was nicely done. What I liked the most was the parts that represented the sky because the glowing of the words did a really good job of giving a picture of it. Also, I liked how the words ended up turning into stars in a dark sky. It was a creative way of showing the sky and its darkness. It alllowed us to get a good visual understanding of what was going on. This is something I may want to use in my own illuminated text.
I really liked how you used the sun and moon, it really helped with the imagery instead of trying to draw something in and make it look sloppy, you chose to find images off of the internet. However, for those who cannot figure out how to do this (including myself) how would we take images from the internet and use them as movable objects in our Illuminated Texts?
This was a really amazing illuminated text. I really like your choice of music. How it starts of really calm and slow and then starts getting more complex as it goes along. I thought it flowed perfectly with your text because it also seemed to get more complex as it went along.
I especially like your choice of colors and fonts for the words. When the text was talking about the tree growing your words acually looked like a tree was growing. These amoung other aspects of your text have given me inspirations for my own illuminated text.

This was a really creative illuminated text. It was simple, but the font colors and the effects really made it stand out. The part with the lines "bud of bud deepests of secrets, root of root" was my favorite and how it was shaped into a tree. Very cool! Also, the part where the "you" turns in "fate" amazed me. Great job on this!
Very impressively done. I may use this as stimulus for some a-level creative work. Thanks.
I can't wait to use this in my classroom. This poem was read at my wedding, and simply amazes me. Thank you.
I adore this poem anyway, but your illuminated text brings it to life. I can't wait to try this approach to teaching poetry to my students. We are searching for poems now and hopefully we'll be able to start our illumations soon! Thanks for the pleasurable experience.
Do you have a specific handout on the website that explains what an illuminated text is? Something that students can look at to understand exactly what the assignment calls for, ie, literary elements, what type of interpretation, etc. I'm having a great time looking at them, but I'm wondering if you have something that clearly explains the concept and the goal of the final product.
Thanks
I loved this concept. I'm trying very hard to incorporate new and original ideas into my curriculum; I think it benefits bothy myself and my students. I'm pretty technologically savy, but I was wondering if you could tell me about Adobe Flash. Does your school own the software? I would love to try this, and I think the flash text is fantastic.
I will post an answer to you in the Illuminated text forum.

This is brilliant! I am desperately searching for a way to incorporate it into my curriculum!
I used this with great success pre-Valentine's Day. It also tied into the idea of a romance quest that I am using to teach Their Eyes Were Watchign God.
Watching this just strengthened my conviction that I need to try this approach with my own students. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
I love how everything is so hands-on based. It gives a clear an interesting vision and paves new ways to teaching old works
That was wonderful. My anticipation for thesome of the familiar lines to come on the screen made me tear up once they did appear. I love that poem.
WOW! I really thought your other version was awesome, and I really didn't think you could improve upon it. Boy, was I wrong! I have been so excited by the illuminated texts on this site ever since I first found them this past weekend. I have shown Cat in the Rain to almost my entire department, and I've shown it to several classes. I wanted everyone to see what wondrous things you and your students have been doing. I also showed this one in two of my classes because we're doing a poetry unit. I'll have to show my students this version tomorrow to see what they think. I know that you stated that it took 20 hours to do the one on PowerPoint, but how long did this one take? How does using Flash compare to PowerPoint?
Again, thanks so much!
