Gooseberries - the story by Anton Chekov

This is the story by Anton Chekov - I give the students a copy so that they can write on it.  Some years, the students read ahead - some years we read the story aloud in class and talk about it during and after our reading.  In any case, this is the story of a man who desires one thing above all - gets it - and it turns out to be quite sour.
