Using Movies in the English Classroom
Submitted by scotese on Sun, 2012-04-29 18:18
If you have an idea or question about using films in the Language Arts classroom - this would be the place to post it. Also if you have a lesson on a movie that is not listed (and it does not have a handout) - post it here.

Film in the English Classroom
Seeing Is Believing, is one way of stating the value of film in a Special Education Classroom. Recently, we read "Night" and studied the holocaust. Then, we watched "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." The visual experience brought an extra depth to understanding the holocaust.
Comparing Books and Movies
Every semester my sophomore research paper revolves around a novel that has been turned into a film.
I ask the students to critically read the novel, examining how the author gets his or her theme across. How does the text explicitly and implicitly make a point? Then they do the same thing with the movie, this time pay attention to how the director makes his or her point. Their paper then evaluates how media can modify these novels and why.
If anyone wants the assignment, I will share. Let me know.
Preparing students to see movie Erin Brockovitch
For a high school reading, Environmental Science or AP Environmental Science or film class, use this anticipation guide to prepare students to first read newspaper articles and then see the movie Erin Brockovitch.
First, copy a few newspaper articles from the internet that were printed during the time of the investigation surrounding the chromium contamination and PSEG\'s culpability. Have the articles ready for students to read. Give students the anticipation guide to prepare them to read about the water contamination and then see the movie detailing the events.
After students read the actual newspaper articles from the time of the investigation and watch the movie, have students review their responses to the anticipation guide. Ask students to write a reflexion on the guide and their new knowledge of chromium contamination, corporate environmental responsibility and what happened in this case.
