Enlightenment Leading To Destruction

a thumbnail of a screen shot from this Illuminated Text[An Illuminated Text of two poems by Rainer Maria Rilke]  In the following presentation, we see the author reflecting upon his past. This look into their past provides them with understanding as to how things are around them and how they reflect their life. The first poem is immediately followed by a second which illustrates our reluctance to go towards death. My partner and I felt that that this connection was somewhat similar to the Allegory of the Cave, where an individual has enlightenment forced upon them and then is killed later by those in the cave. Only in the allegory there isn't somebody to hold up all of the chaos.

Reminded by a rain

This poem is one that reflects life itself. Life is full of first "Hellos" and last "Goodbyes." Yet the two edged sword is that sometimes letting go of our past is something to heavy to bear and it is sad to let go of the people and places we keep so close to our hearts. Yet, in the same turn when we leave the comfort of our lives to explore the unknown of the world we end up finding a new comfort with different people and far away places. This poem personifies the difficulties and trade-offs of moving on and being able to say your final "Goodbye."

Spring's rain

a scene from this Illuminated TextThis is a poem called "Before Summer's Rain" written by Rainer Maria Rilke. The poem is about someone facing an oncoming storm and reminscing about the past. While reminiscing, they become unafraid of what is about to come. The Illuminated Text combines the uncertainty of the future with the desire for a better future. [Great use of a photo for background - great animation - and ultimately great explication of the poem. JRS]

To Bear Fruit: An Illuminated Text Of Rainer Maria Rilke's "The Apple Orchard"

In this illuminated text of Rainer Maria Rilke's "The Apple Orchard", we used carefully selected music, colors and motion to recreate Rilke's vision of an apple orchard. Some words were colored either red, green or yellow, the color of apples. The relaxing soundtrack meshes with the peaceful image Rilke creates in this poem, even the title of the song, "Natural", fits in with the poem. The last slide brings it all together when words are used to make a picture of an apple orchard.

Memories of the Past: an Illuminated Text of Rainer Rilke's poem

a screenshot from this Illuminated TextThis is an illuminated text of the poem Before Summer Rain by Rainer Maria Rilke. It shows some of the cool effects that one can create by using flash and provides a unique way of experiencing the poem. In the poem, it is about to rain and that reminds the author of the summers of his childhood. We tried to pick a song that we thought uniquely linked to the poem.

We Think As We Lay: An Illuminated Text of Again and again

We interpreted Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “Again and again…” through this presentation of colored and moving text. We used a plain template of black and white and emphasized key words with color. The poem describes two lovers who fulfill the saying “together forever” by being buried next to each other in a graveyard “face to face with the sky”. ENJOY!

The Illuminated Truth: An Illuminated Text Project using World Literature

Teaching Level:
High School

Every year I change which Illuminated Texts that the students do in association with their reading.  This year they are creating presentations based on the opening stories that we read: "The Allegory of the Cave,"  "The Night Face Up,"  "War,"  "Young Goodman Brown," as well as a number of poems by Ranier Maria Rilke.  When I gave them this handout, we also had a day in the lab where I gave them a lesson on the fundamentals of Flash programming.

The Trials, Consequences and Lessons Learned an Illuminated Text of "The End and the Beginning" by Jenna Rozelle, Taylor Ulmer, and Angel Teran

This is an Illuminated Text of Wislawa Szymborska's "The End and the Beginning". It highlights all the things the people who encountered and survived the war had to do in order to move on from the war. The clean up related tasks are the emphasis of the Illuminated Text in order to show the contrast between these people and those who have had no firsthand expirience with war and instead spend their time laying in the garss "with a cornstalk in his teeth". Also the sound effects emphasize it greatly.

Nostalgia (Before Summer Rain by Rainer Maria Rilke)

This is an Illuminated Text based off of “Before Summer Rain” by Rainer Maria Rilke. In the poem, the persona looks back on life and finally realizes just how much time has passed them by. The persona then becomes nostalgic about the days that they once had, which are now the days that they can never get back. We chose this poem because we believed that it conveyed a powerful message, and was rich in imagery.

Sweet Disposition

We chose this poem because its theme was one of the many we had talked about(the past, remebering it, and to move foward) and was very descriptive. So in our illuminated text, we tried to show the connections between the life or descriptions of the apple orchard to our lives. For instance, the bearing of the fruit echoing old memories(later on). Also, to go with this theme we picked a song to match up with the "remember the good old times" theme.

Time Marches On: an Illuminated Text of Rainer Maria Rilke's 'Growing Old'

We chose to create an Illuminated Text based on the poem 'Growing Old' by Rainer Maria Rilke because, although it is translated from German, it evokes beautiful, clear imagery and feelings of joy and profound loss at the same time. It is a poem about the vanished years of youth. It is universal, just as every part of ourselves will vanish with the passage of time and we must resign ourselves to that truth. That is what we hoped to convey in this Illumination.

The Emptiness: An Illuminated Text of "Before Summer Rain"

We chose this text because of it’s connect ability to all the different works of literature we’ve read so far in this class. It could connect to “Young Goodman Brown”, “The Allegory of the Cave”, “The History of Love”, and most recently “Candide”.

We hope to show the recurring theme we found in the text. Its theme is of something, we don’t know what, disappearing all of a sudden and the emptiness that lingers afterwards. We hope to show this by underlining key words that express those kinds of sentiments.

Summer Rain

This is an Illuminated Text on Before Summer Rain by Rainer Maria Rilke. In this illuminated text we take the poem and we use the word to describe the images seen. The poem is about reflecting back on your lost childhood. How our childhood drifts away with out our noticing, and we just have the memories.
