"Leaning into the Afternoons" an illuminated text of Pablo Neruda's poem by Amy Chiu & Lily Situ

three men pulling in a fishing net at sunsetAn illuminated text by Amy Chiu and Lily Situ of Neruda's poem.  Each year, when we study Pablo Neruda - I allow students to do an Illuminated Text as extra credit - each year a number of students do just that.  [There is now a QuickTime Video version of this presentation.]The text, the animation, and the music do a wonderful job of pondering the poet's words: Leaning into the afternoons I cast my sad nets/ towards your oceanic eyes.  There in the highest blaze my solitude lengthens and flames,/its arms turning like a drowning man's.

"We Have Lost Even" an illuminated text of Pablo Neruda's poem.

a building, some trees, and a beautiful sunsetThis presentation by Karol Sobczyk is touching, nostalgic, and powerful.  It also shows a high level of mastery of Power Point in making Pablo Neruda's poem come to life.  Karol also uses images in this illuminated text to the best possible advantage.  And, while most illuminated texts have songs that do not have words -- here they lyrics of the song match perfectly with what is taking place in the poem and in the animation.

Retreating Statues - An Illuminated Text of Pablo Neruda's "We Have Lost Even This"

A yellow sun on a blue background made up of the word sunThis presentation by Cat Valentine and Alex Galus is the second one to consider this poem by Pablo Neruda.  Unlike the other Illuminated Text, this one makes use of word pictures much more than it does of  photos.  It is interesting to compare the two -- they are both brilliant.  In fact, by looking at different Illuminated Texts of the same work it is often possible to come away with new, and different interpretations of the same text.

Help with Audacity (Sound Editor)

Many thanks to Jennifer Cheung who took the time to put together four very helpful pictures (complete with annotations) for those that are having trouble using Audacity (the open source sound-editing program).  The pictures (topics) include 1) Finding the LAME (mp3) encoder  2) Selecting a sound clip  3) Pasting a sound clip  4) Exporting your mp3 file.  The instructions are clear and demonstrative -- so

An Illuminted Text of Clenched Soul: A Poem by Pablo Neruda

a screenshot showing a sunset from a window I chose to create an illuminated text on Pablo Neruda's poem, Clenched Soul. After watching the movie, The Postman, I was really interested in Neruda's works. This poem is written especially beautifully in my opinion and describes vivid images, two aspects that create an interesting illuminated text. I tried to enable viewers to understand the poem through pictures I drew as well as focusing on certain words. Hope you enjoy! [The vivid images that this presenter talks about are recreated in her wonderful Illuminated Text - especially the blue sky dropping on the poets world and later becoming a sunset. JRS]

The Saddest Poem: An Illuminated Text by Julia Ghica and Suzy Sanchez

"The Saddest Poem" by Pablo Neruda is about conflicting emotions inside a person after they've lost the person they loved so much. At the end of the poem, the persona finally admits that, yes, he still is in love with her. At the end, I get the feeling that it won't be the last pain she causes him, but he's able to pick up and move on, even though he'll always have this memory. He's able to move on.

Pablo Neruda's "I can write the saddest lines"

The following Illuminated Text is based off the poem I can write the saddest Lines tonight. The poem is filled with imagery, and often Neruda was able to capture the sense of sorrow and loss in his poem. I wanted to show how the world changed when She left the Narrator, and to express my interpretation of key words found within the poem. The song played during the illuminated text is called Hollow Bastion, and was chosen due to the ominous feeling obtained when I originally listen to the song on Kingdom Hearts, while showing a speck of hope in the middle of the song.

Your Feet, Pablo Neruda

A beautiful enchanting poem set up with romantic touching words, I represent this poem into a colorful collection of pictures filled with its words put to life, one after another.  Pablo Neruda spreads rich words of love in this poem of "Your Feet" to acknowledge the true desire to a lover. The words of the true desire are expressed through a rhythm in a contagious heart touching approach to the reader. So readers, you must listen carefully, appreciate it, put on a smile and think about it. :)

Love Sonnet IX

This is an Illuminated Text on Pablo Neruda’s poem called Love Sonnet IX. This poem contains many images all centered around the main theme of love everlasting. In this poem, the persona speaks of many occurrences, usually of destruction, that can occur in our lives and tear others apart, yet says that, despite it all, the persona and their loved one will stay together, making this a truly lovely poem. Below is the full poem:

Silence and Stillness: An Illuminated Text of Pablo Neruda's "I like for you to be still"

I did my Illuminated Text on Pablo Neruda's "I like for you to be still". The poem is mainly depicting the sense of loss. It describes losing someone and the pain that they feel in noticing that they are no longer there. As a result, it is a melancholy poem, but it is far from being one-dimensional. Rather, it ends with hope and a certain sense of expectation. Thus, I tried to pick a song that was melancholy but hopeful and aspiring at the same time. In this poem, Neruda also utilizes medium-length sentences and simple imagery.

Love Notes: An Illuminated Text by Stan Kolek

This is an Illuminated Text about Chapter Seven from the book A Long Long Time Ago and Essentially True by Brigid Pasulka. It expresses the importance of the love notes written by Anielica to the Pigeon. Chapter Seven is very important to the book because it shows how important the love that existed between Czeslaw and Anielica was.

Tired of being a Man

This illuminated text is all about the parallels of Dante and why he is having a hard time reaching his "Mount of Joy" with IL Postino's fisherman being held back to his "Mount of Joy." Also it also brings into account the common "sins" we see in the world and how it is holding us back from being a utopia just like with the fisherman and Dante.
