A Creator's Dilemma

This illuminated text explores the duties of a creator.  It begins with a question posed by Frankenstein's monster and continues with the ponderings of Victor Frankenstein himself. He says "I thoguht a species would bless me as its source" and with happiness "owe their being to me."  The music chosen is a haunting Celtic tune.  You'll love it!

Monstrosity in Frankenstein

This presentation explores the theme of monstrosity within Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.  Is it simply beauty which makes us good? Victor Frankenstein attempted to create beauty and instead created a visage of terror.  Using a modern piece of music, this Illuminated Text is thrilling. It's red motif and stark lettering shows the "horrid" contrast between appearance and reality.

Isolation in Frankenstein

Isolation is a universal theme found throughout literature.  Man's search for his identity is, without a doubt, one of the most common journeys in story.  No where is this more prevalent or poignant than in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.  This Illuminated Text explores the theme of alienation with a haunting and melancholy tune, pictures of solitude and the interwoven words of both Frankenstein and his monster.

The Loss of Innocence--Frankenstein

a deep purple woodsThis is perhaps the most beautiful Illuminated Text I have seen from one of my students.  Their exploration of the theme of "The Loss of Innocence" in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein will take your breath away.  When we showed this in class, the other students were stunned and knew their grades would hurt because of it!  Using haunting music and Romantic images to illustrate Mary Shelley's words they have created a piece that few can equal!

Cheerfully Resigned to Death

This Illuminated Text explores the tenuous link between life and death in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It is a fun examination of Shelley's text, and although some of the fonts were lost in the conversion to Flash, it is still great! You'll enjoy their use of color, text, and music.

If I Could be Frank; You're Ugly

The student who created this Illuminated Text on Manipulation in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein impressed me with his choice of music and his timing with it.  I also really enjoyed his use of animation, it surprised me that he pulled the essential words from a longer quote, rearranged them and made them a smaller quote. It made me see the words in a new way.  Which, after all, is the point of the assignment!

An Illuminated Text of Charlotte Bronte's "Evening Solace"

The concept of illuminated texts is new to our school.  My students completed their first presentations earlier this semester and are now working on their second ones.  I was impressed with the way they tackled the learning curve and solved technical issues on their own.  I thought that this student did a lovely job with mood and word associations.

Carpe Diem: An Illuminated Text of Herrick's To The Virgins to Make Much of Time

This is an illuminated text about Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). A lot of people waste their time, it is very important to seize the day. Life is only so long, we should spend every moment to its best and take hold of every opportunity. I felt that this is a good way to end the school year for British Literature. There were many activities and things that we did this year that gave me inspiration and motivation to take every moment in life that belongs to me. Every smile and every experience is a new page in my adventure book. No one knows what will happen tomorrow, but we can enjoy today.

Ode on a Grecian Urn

This is an illuminated text on John Keats poem Ode on a Grecian Urn. Through this illuminated text I tried to bring out the important parts of the poems with animated pictures. I hope it helps to understand this great poem. All we need to know is " beauty is truth, truth beauty." [An incredible Illuminated Text - what makes it more impressive is that this was an end of the year, extra credit project and the student only had about two weeks to complete it.  It is very well done. An Illuminated Text of Blake's "The Tyger"

The Tyger contemplates how the creation of the animal came to be but specifically how its divine creator reacted at seeing his creation. In my illuminated text I wanted to emphasize the presence of the tyger throughout the whole presentation so I choose an orange shade as the background while keeping the text black to represent the stripes. At one point in the illuminated text there’s a pair of hands to demonstrate the creator’s presence as William Blake questions how the tyger could be completed.

Illuminated Text Brainstorming

Teaching Level:
High School

Attached is brainstorming handout to use with illuminated texts. As you can see, I use it for teaching Romantic poetry; however, it can be modified for any illuminated text project. I asked my students to focus on the theme and mood of their poem. These elements should be evident through their PowerPoint. I usually use the exam of "Cat in the Rain" (an illuminated text also available on this site) to show how their illuminated text should demonstrate the mood and theme of a literary work.

Diminished Expectations: A Pride and Prejudice Illuminated Text

a picture of a proper 18th century womanAn Illuminated Text by Shimeng Yu and Chen Feng looks at the almost impossible expectations that are put upon women in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.  Through the use of music, text, animation, and movement -- their point comes across strong and clear.  To create an Illuminated Text from such a large text can often be daunting - as opposed to completely presenting a short poem, the students much pick and choose what they find as relevant to their presentation - much as they do with an essay.  They do a terrific job here.
