"The Wanderer" lines 98 - end

This last part of the poem describes alot of things, mainly about what this one wise man's conversation with his counsel. What we really tried to do is to illitrate the many descriptive places, and other things. Our main goal was to "paint" you the picture to what was going on in this poem, and really bring the words alive.

The Wanderer: An Illuminated Text by Nancy Guo and Paulina Rico

ImageThis is an illuminated text for the 'Wanderer' lines nineteen thorugh thirty nine. There is no theme in our animation because we animated line by line to help you visualize what is going on. We felt that this poem evokes a sense of being trapped, while being a hermit so we did a lot of breaking up of phrases with words within them, as you will see with the part of the England outline.

Buried in the Ashes: An Illuminated Text of "Eagle of Pengwern"

The eyes we choose to view something determines everything. The city of Trenn has clearly been ravaged, looted, and deprived from its lost battle. An eagle looms above picking at the flesh of dead corpses. But buried in the ashes is something more. Buried in the ashes is the courage that Trenn's soldiers manifested, shaming you for not dying nobly with them.

The music of this illumtext is an arrangement of Wagner's Funeral March from musopen.com. It is public domain.

Surviving the absence of an old love:an illuminated text of "The Wife's Lament"

The poem we decided to create an illuminated text for is The Wife’s Lament. This poem is about an Anglo -Saxon woman exiled by her husband. This was very common and acceptable among the Anglo-Saxon. Through this illuminated text we interpret the actions and feelings of this woman. Some of the things we did to give the text this effect was have it perform exactly what she is narrating. We also chose our font to be cursive; we chose this font because it is commonly used in love letters, especially those written by women. Color also played a great part in our illuminated text.

All to Nothing: An Illuminated Text of Deor

All to Nothing: An Illuminated Text of Deor represents the good, the bad, and the ugly things that people face every day. At times one can feel all alone but bad things happen and we can move past it. The situation may seem impossible to overcome at the moment, but we've been through similar situations before. “That went by, so can this.” Music: Prelude in B Minor No. 15 'Raindrop', Op. 28 http://musopen.org/music/piece/339

Suffering: An Illuminated Text of "The Seafarer"

This is an illuminated text of the first 22 lines of "The Seafarer". This poem is about the pain and sorrow of a man who is taken by the sea and thrown back and forth through all types of horrible conditions. The Whale: An Illuminated Text by Jacob Abrahams and Bernice Cai

This is the Anglo-Saxon poem, The Whale. It is about a mighty whale, that terrorizes sailors. The poem is interesting because it focuses very heavily on imagery, and while the main plot of a malevolent whale is present, the descriptions (his shape is like rough stone//girt by sandbanks for example) are very vivid.

The Husband's Message

This was the very first illuminated text I or my partner had created. It was quite confusing since neither of us knew how to work the program. The poem we chose was “The Husband’s Message.” It consists of 54 lines total. We chose this poem because we found it very touching, even though it'squite long.

The Wood is Mightier than the Cell Phone: An Illuminated Text of "The Husband's Message"

Our illuminated text was inspired by The Husband's Message. A poem translated by Burton Raffel detailing a message being delivered to a wife who learns about her husband's current life. A truly touching story and proof that love is indeed a powerful thing to behold. This is a case where the wood is mightier than the cell phone. Please enjoy our hard work and leave comments on what could be improved, what you liked, and if you too now know and have enjoyed the Husband's Message.

That Went By, So Can This: An Illuminated Text by Deor

This Illuminated text, created for the poem Deor, provides different effects for each stanza but then connects them all with the line, "That went by, so can this". A common effect throughout the illuminated text is fading, which was used to reinforce the idea found in the poem that everything fades and passes as time goes on. The music in the presentation (Rachmaninov piano concerto 2) is a perfect representation of the poem because both have a common theme, stray off to tell a story, and then comes back to reinforce the main idea that everything passes. (97 words)

If I should die before I wake: An Illuminated Text of "Lost"

Sometimes loneliness can take its toll on a person and can send you reeling into a world of emptiness, ready to crumble and fall. Some people are used to and actually quite comfortable with this solitude. At other times when someone is abandoned, they lose their sight of the meaning of life and their purpose of existence. This poem pictures a life without hope, ambition, dreams and expectation.

The Introduction to the Wanderer: An Illuminated Text by Charles Zhang and Charles Liang

The Wanderer gave us the feeling of foreshadowing and solemness.  That's why the majority of the background was black. It was dark and foreboding and we thought that black fit perfectly.  We thought that the song from the secret garden fit this poem because like mentioned before, the poem sounded deep and ominous. Also with a bit of sadness and longing. We figured that the song from the secret garden was a good fit for this poem.  We had a lot of fading in the Illuminated Text because we thought that was the best way to show loneliness. We hope you enjoy!
