Earning points at A Way to Teach

When you contribute to the  AwaytoTeach community you will earn points.  Once you have earned 50 points, you will be able to download lessons, watch Illuminated Texts, etc. There is no cost to use our website, except to give a little of your time back for what our community has created.

Commenting

Commenting in a forum or on a piece of content (ie Illuminated Text, Teacher Lesson, etc.) is worth 2 points.  Remember the following guidelines when you are commenting:

  • Do not comment on something that you have not seen.  If you are not yet a Letterman (50 points),  you cannot see most content on our website - and if you are commenting as though you have - well that's just not right (and you will be blocked).
  • Please do comment on one of the Forums - we have a lot.  There are forums on Literature; on Teaching; on Illuminated Texts; and a whole lot more.
  • Do not comment (or do anything for that matter) just to earn points - comments such as "Here's 2 more points!" will be deleted and their creator banned.  Please try to be thoughtful in what you write.
  • Have a subject heading that reflects the thesis (ah English teachers) of what  your post is about - do not leave it blank as this will lead to a not so helpful automatic subject heading.  There are lots of great subject heading examples on our site.
  • Make sure you are posting in the right spot - it's usually better to post in a forum than in response to content such as polls.
  • Be nice - remember, this is a community.  I think the best guideline, as far as this area goes, is to be as nonjudgmental as you possibly can.
  • Short, perfunctory comments that appear to only be created to earn points will be have their point value adjusted.

Quotes

Quotes: Adding a favorite or important quote is worth 1 point for each.  I think this is a great way to give all of our site members a way to put their own touch on our website.  When adding a quote please remember the following:

  • Make sure the quote is not already on the site.  The easiest way to do this is to type the name of the author in the search box - it should bring up everything on that author (including quotes).
  • Enter all of the quote information that you know.  There are separate parts of the form for the quote, the author, and the citation (the book it comes from).

Points for Lessons

Lessons that are uploaded are worth 2 - 50 points.  Points are based on the depth and  completeness of the lesson and are not meant to reflect in anyway upon the worth or quality of the lesson itself

A complete lesson has a lesson description (in the description box) and at least one attached, detailed handout.  A more comprehensive description of the criteria can be found here. Lessons that are deemed not complete enough for the Lesson section of this website will be moved to the appropriate forum and the poster will be awarded two or more points.  Once again ... this is no reflection upon the worth or quality of the lesson.

Lessons must be free of advertisements.

Please remember to check the formatting of your lesson description after you submit it - we regret that we do not have the ability to fix formatting errors and "broken" lessons or descriptions will be deleted.
