Introspection: An Illuminated Text of Hopkins's Spring and Fall

This illuminated text uses a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. I so far haven't seen one yet, so I believe that this one is original. It is an illuminated text on Spring and Fall to a Young Child by Gerard Manley Hopkins. That poem seemed like a letter, or a direct conversation, because of the starting word. So I made the entire illuminated text seem like a flowing letter. "Margaret," in the middle, emphasizes to whom this is talking to.

An Illuminated Text of "Spring and Fall To a Young Child" by Gerard Manley Hopkins

 This poem was one of my favorite poems of the year. In this illustration you are taken through the motions of a young child filled with innocence grieving over a change in season. It touches my heart to the see the change that takes place as I mature into a young adult and to see that such small things do not sadden me anymore.

"See...and Believe" : An Illumination of The History of Love.

We illuminated an excerpt for the History of Love. We explored the relationship between Leo and the younger Alma at the end of his life. In our text Leo exploring what is real and what he is imagining. He is coming to term with the fact that most of the things he he sees are imaginary. Our text all discusses how Alma adores Leo and for her he would do anything.

Gerard Manley Hopkins: An Illuminated Text of "God's Grandeur"

Since I am keen to introduce illuminated texts into my classroom, I decided to work on a few myself in order to learn the process.  I chose this poem because I think it is stunning and because of the distinctly different mood between the first and second parts. (Note: music and some animations have since been updated)

An Illuminated Text : "The Windhover" by Gerard Manley Hopkins

This poem is full of life and movement and is unconventional in its use of grammar and certain words.  Gerard Manley Hopkins compares life to the explosive beauty of a bird in flight as it fights the wind.  This is a Quicktime version. Gerard Manley Hopkins: 3 Poems and 3 accompanying poems

 There are a total of six poems here - and they go along with a class discussion that I had about the poems with my students.  There is another collection of Hopkins poems on this website as well.  The poems start with "Delight in Disorder" a poem by Robert Herrick that leads to Hopkins "Pied Beauty."  Then there are the poems "Spring and Fall" (along with an illustration by a 6 year old Joe Scotese, and "The Caged Skylark."  Finally there are two modern poems to accompany the last two Hopkins poems.
