The Tempest - Act IV - a class reading 2010

There is so much to talk about in Act IV as Prospero's plans come near to fruition.  As he talks to his daughter and Ferdinand, and then forgets about the conspirators - we also get a chance to talk about nature versus nurture and the similarity with which he treats Miranda and Caliban.

The Tempest - Act II - A Class Discussion 2010

All of Act II in one class discussion - how do we do it?  Well we do cut a lot - mostly what takes place at the beginning of the scene between Gonzollo, Antonio, Alonso, and Sebastian.  We do cover the conspiracty that takes place when Ariel puts the king asleep - and we introduce Stephano and Trinculo and their first scene with Caliban.

Out of the Labyrinth: The Tempest - Act V - A final discussion

A final class discussion of Shakespeare's play, The Tempest.  There are a lot of things that we need to finish - ideas that we began in the beginning of our discussion that are reaching fruition.  Why does Prospero bring these people to the island?  Why does he give up his power -- and that great ambiguous line about his claim to "this thing of darkness."

An Introduction to Shakespeares Sonnet Per A Dec 1, 2010

This recording details a lecture/discussion on four of Shakespeare's Sonnets.  For the first three - we look at the Sonnets on the projector (and the students on their handouts that I have given them).  The way I have set it up - we reveal one or two lines at a time so we can take it in small steps - and the poems  reveal themselves in a wonderful way.  The final sonnet is a personal take - based on my own experience reading the  poem at my wedding and what that poem means to me.

The Tempest - Act 1 - Scene 2 - A class reading - day 2 2010

This scene is the longest scene in all of Shakespeare and today we spent our second day reading through it and talking about it.  There is an awful lot of exposition before we get to the action and some of that we skip directly over - but then we begin the process of trying to figure out the labyrinth that Prospero will put the castaways through.

The Tempest - wrapping up the play - from Act 4 to Act 5 - Period 9 - 2009

We finish talking about The Tempest - there is much to talk about: Prospero giving up his powers - and a small sad but true story from a classroom long ago - and the wonderful epilogue (is it Shakespeare saying goodbye?).   We also revel in the wonderfully ambiguous words of Prospero: "this thing of darkness I claim as my own."

Shakespeare: Henry IV Part 1 - Seminar Day 1

In the past I have taught Henry IV Part 1 by having the students give seminars - they get to see what teaching is like and so they aren't overwhelmed - I give them 1/2 of the focus for the day.  If you want to listen in, this is a recording of the first day's seminar.
