Grendel - Chapters 7-9 A Class Discussion Period B 2010

There is a lot of territory to cover in Chapters 7 to 9, and we do it by dividing the class into rows - each row has a certain section of those chapters - and each student within that section must find 2 questions, comments, or combinations thereof that are suitable for discussion along with a direct quote from that section that could be the basis of discussion.  This works great at many levels - for one thing, it usually leads to a great discussion - but it also shifts the burden to the student and makes them a much more active participant in the discussion.

Grendel - An Opening Discussion Chapter 1 - 2009 - Per A

So much depends on the first discussion of a book - it sets the mood for the rest of the novel and gives the students clues for what to look for was they read it (and mark it up) on their own.  We talk about how we view Grendel in this novel versus how we saw him in Beowulf, and we talk about his fight against a world with purpose - and we sneak in the Grinch too.

Grendel - Chapter 6 - Everything Had Changed - A class discussion

After the heavy philosophy of Chapter 5 - Chapter 6 is a delight.  Grendel comes back to both try and fulfill what the dragon calls his destiny and to try and defy it.  We talk about Unferth, the apple battle, and free will.

John Gardner's Grendel - An Opening Discussion

The opening discussion of any book in a classroom is important - in the case of this novel, it is crucial.  For many of my students this will be the most difficult book that they have ever read - with its streams of conciousness, flashbacks, and heavy doses of philosophy.  Therefore we ease ourselves into it -- making sure that any of the students' qualms get addressed.  We do a close reading of the first few pages -- talk about the setting and how it fits in with our reading of Beowulf -- and we begin to delve into the idea of "men's theories" that is so important

Hunting Wild Animals: A Class Discussion of John Gardner's Grendel - Chapters 2 & 3

The idea of cause and effect is one of the central themes covered in Grendel and we tackle it head on in this class activity and discussion.  First we go out to the lunchroom to "hunt wild animals," only to find there are none there.  Then we go back to our "village" and draw pictures of the animals we want on the board -- when we next go out to the hunting grounds we find an abundance of animals.  Next, I play Bruce Springsteen's "Empty Sky," talk about how Shapers mold our world and help us deal with the hardest parts of our life.&nbsp

Grendel Opening Discussion Period B - 2009

There is so much to discuss here in the opening - why begin with Grendel's encounter with a Ram - what does it mean that he stopped playing "cat and mouse with the universe," and just the overall feel that the students have for a book that looks at the story that they just read - Beowulf - from the monster's point of view.

Grendel - Chapters 5 and 6 - A Class Discussion - Period B - 2009

There is, as with most of these discussions, an awful lot to talk about here.  First we talk about what happens in the most philosophical and "deep" of the book's chapters - Five.  Here the dragon talks to Grendel about his purpose with regards to men and tries to convince him that he does not really harm mankind - he makes them better.  Next, talk about Chapter 6 which has the surprising idea that the charm that the Dragon puts on Grendel is really not a good thing - but instead is a curse.

Grendel - Discussion #2 - Hunting Wild Animals and the TV as the Shaper

This is one of those lessons that when I look back on it - I can't imagine that we do so much in such a short period of time.  We begin by going out and hunting for wild animals - no animals to be found.  Then we draw pictures of animals on our "cave" wall.  This time they are there - cause and effect.  Next, I read "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and we talk about how Tennyson turned a blunder into a heroic charge.

Grendel - Chapters 7-10 A Class Discussion Per B - 2010

When there are a lot of chapters to cover, it sometimes makes sense, as in this case, to divide the chapters up - assign different rows to different chapters and then each student gets a chance to start the conversation with a question, comment, or quote from their specific section.  We cover from after Grendel's discovery of his invulnerability to the encounter between Grendel and Orc the head priest.
