During my time at Whitney Young, I have experienced a lot and have a lot of cherished memories. In this project, I recorded some of the sounds that I heard while at Whitney Young. My first sound is my AP Biology class, which is very interesting. The second sound is my division. Every day for six years, I have been in division with these people. We share a lot of memories together. My third sound is the sound of my locker. My locker has been like a friend to me. I have had one for six years. My fourth sound is the hallways.

This project was a bit hard at first because sounds aren't usually what I use to measure memories. So, I chose to edit this project a bit differently. I wanted this group of collected memories to be presented the way I remember them, like photographs or snap shots of my school.

The first sound is of me taking batting practice after school one day. Next is the sound of the softball team conditioning during a practice. After this is sounds of multiple members of the softball team making fun of Clara for something that she did. Finally, the sound of a post-game chat with the softball team.

These are the sounds that I hear everyday this year and are the most memorable ones i'll soon miss.

1. First thing I do in the morning.
2. What I hear before going into class.
3. The only quiet peaceful place.
4. Getting my fill of good science education.
5. Doing groupwork in Scotese's class.
6. Getting lectured in calculus.
7. The sound of having a sub in calculus.
8. My favorite sound of the day.

For this project, I wanted implement sounds that are amusing, and other sounds that I don't look forward to (like my first sound). Sound 2 is something that makes me laugh on a daily basis. Sound 3 is one of the sweetest sounds in the school. Sound 4 is something that us senior don't worry as much about. Sound 5 is a good friend of mine talking about a half day. Sound 6 is the new WY epidemic. Sound 7 is...girl problems.Finally, sound 8 is the biggest jokester in the school.

ImageI started off sampling the sound at the beginning of the day. Then I went on to sample things that our part of my everyday. These included sounds from division to my different classes. Then next I included sounds that aren't heard on an everyday basis. There are some sounds that don't make Whitney more bearable, but that do make it unique. I finished with something beautiful.

When I wrote on my classmate's yearbook, in 1979 - I didn't know it then but I was writing my first Five Minutes for Friday.  I was the only senior in a class of underclassmen - and before I left I wanted to tell them something about how quickly the time would go.  Ou sont les nieges d'hier.

Every year we have a career day at my school - with my World Lit/Journalism kids - I try to have a writer come in and talk about the writing process.  With my British Literature students, however, I am the guest speaker and I talk about my two jobs - teaching and being a father - this is a recording of that talk.

Five Minutes for Friday - Aunt Nora and the Package - 2011

 Recently, my Aunt Nora passed away - and in my mourning it brought back many wonderful memories of this incredibly generous and good-hearted woman.  No memory was more moving than the one that I had nearly forgotten: A package that she had sent for my daughter - a package and a dress full of goodness and possibility.
