The 2nd Tree From The Corner Per 8 May 18, 2010

A culminating story (by E.B. White) that we read through in class together - it is, quite simply to my mind, one of the most beautiful, pure, and important essays/stories in American Literature.  It tells the story of a man going to a therapist for help through the anxieties of life - who realizes in the end that the things he wants in life are neither attainable nor are they tangible - and there is a great beauty in that feeling.

The 2nd Tree From The Corner by E.B. White - A Class Reading and Discussion - May 19, 2011

My favorite essay by one of my favorite writers - E.B. White.  This is also the story that I pass out more to friends, students, and family than any other.  We read it in class before we read White's Stuart Little.  It's the story of a man seeing a therapist - and he ends up discovering that the thing that he really wants - more than anything else - is neither attainable nor material - but it is that desire that makes his life fulfilling and worthwhile.  We read the story in class and discuss it.

Stuart Little - Chapters 9 to the end - Heading North - May 23, 2011

We finish discussing E.B. White's Stuart Little - and by now the students have guessed why I teach this book as our final text.  We discuss each of the chapters - Stuart's escape from garbage scow, his leaving home, his turn as a substitute teacher - Harriet Ames and the ruined canoe trip and the ending.  It is the ending that I find so wonderful - the idea of Stuart always heading North - always searching for Margalo.  Finally, I tie the book into all of the other novels that we have read this year.

Wanting the Unattainable: A class discussion of E.B. White's "The Second Tree from the Corner."

We discuss - in fact, we read the story aloud and stop along the way with our comments and questions, E.B. White's story about a man who sees a therapist, only to realize that the things he wants, like "the second tree from the corner," are the things that are unattainable and that keep him going from day to day.

Stuart Little by E.B. White - A Class Discusion - Part 1 - Period 5 - 2009

At the end of the year, my students read Stuart Little by E.B. White and we spend a couple of days talking about it.  In many ways, they will not know why we read this book (at this time of the year) until they read the last page - however in this discussion we talk about what makes for a good children's book - and we go over the life lessons that we can learn from Stuart.  We also talk a little about the plot - especially the Sail Boat Race - to top everything off - there is a minature 5 minutes for Friday at the end.

Stuart Little Part 1 Per 6 May 19, 2010

At the end of the year we read, in World Literature, E.B. White's Stuart Little. The book sums up much of what we do - and though they may not understand why we are reading it - when we look at the first part (Chapters 1-8); they will by the ending. In this lesson we also read Robert Fulghum's "Everything that I needed to learn in life, I learned in kindergarten." This is the 6th period discussion.

Five Minutes for Friday - Stuart Little and the Sailboat May 20, 2011

The first of two "5 Minutes for Fridays" about Stuart Little - this one is about a little boy who wanted nothing more than to sail a boat like his hero Stuart Little did - and how he eventually had that dream come true.

Stuart Little Part Two Period 8 May 24, 2010

Our last class discussion and it is a fitting one.  I begin by asking the students if they have figured out yet why we are reading and finishing the year with this particular book - about 1/3 to 1/2 of the students do.  We then go through the chapters  - Stuart's narrow brush with death, his turn as a teacher substitute, his meeting with the Ames girl - and finally the crossroads he reaches at the end of the story as he tries to find Margalo.

Stuart Little - Chapters 1-8: Everything that I need to learn in life I learned from Stuart Little - May 20, 2011

We read Stuart Little at the end of the year with my seniors because it is a wonderful story about love, holding on, and letting go.  We discuss the first 8 chapters - talk about what makes a children's story great and read Robert Fulgum's "Everything that I needed to learn in life, I learned in Kindergarten."  And then we look for the specific life lessons that we got out of Stuart Little.  A great discussion.

Joseph Scotese and Journalism/World Lit - Stuart Little Class Discussion Part 1

If you want to know why I teach E.B. White's story of a mouse-like boy born (note - not adopted) into a human family to a bunch of mostly seniors about to leave school for the great beyond -- this is the discussion to listen to.

"The Second Tree from the Corner" a class discussion of E.B. White's short story - Per 5 - 2009

This story not only fits in perfectly with what we have just read and studied in this class - "How Much Land Does a Man Need?,"  Song of Solomon, it also meshes with what I have tried to teach the entire year - and of course it follows and expands on the ideas of the previous day's lesson: "The Myth of Sisyphus."  Also the next work we read, Stuart Little, is also by E.B. White.
