House On Mango Final Disc May 12, 2011

Wow!  Our final discussion of the book - for the first time taught at the end of the year.  By teaching it when I did, we were able to make so many connections to the other works that we have read - and the whole thing turned out wonderfully - including the poignant moment when we all come to realize that Esperanza does get her house - it is just not the house that she thought she would get.  An amazing discussion.

The House on Mango Street - A Class Discussion Part 3 - Then Some More

Our class discussion of The House on Mango Street continues.  We are in about the middle of the book here -- and whenever possible we talk about a few of the things that were brought up in their group work.  The central theme, as in the other discussions, is what is it that Esperanza is searching for.

An Opening Class Discussion of The House On Mango Street pgs. 1-32 May 3, 2011

This is the final year of teaching my World Literature Class - at least as it exists now - and I decided to end the year with the book that I first taught.  I cannot say enough about how much I love and appreciate this book - which reads in many was as an extended prose poem.  As the class comes in, and as they're taking their quizzes, I play these songs.  Next, we  go over some Stephen Booth moments that can be found in the opening paragraph - the worksheet for that

House On Mango Pgs 33-52 A Class Discussion May 4, 2011

Today we cover the second part of the book - and the deeper we get the more connections and "serious" ideas we see behind this novel, that many of my students read when they were much younger - but now discover to be a very different book as they read it from their more adult perspectives.  We talk about the girl foray into a loss of innocence with the high heels and the constant trying to escape from their world without really knowing why.

The House On Mango St Pgs 78-93 A Class Discussion May 10, 2011

So much to discuss (and connect) here.  Ruthie and the exotic drinks she settles for - the women who are locked up - Sally and her abusive father, Nenny's emergence into womanhood - Minerva (the chapter that I lost the pages for) - and through it all the idea of Esperanza and her writing and her house.

The House on Mango Street - A Class Discussion Part 4 - "Papa" onward

There are times that a class discussion can be downright cathartic -- and this is one of them.  When Esperanza's father loses his own parent gs up a number of issues that leads to a heartfelt discussion: these include the empathy of Esperanza, the effect it has on her (and on us), as well as our own losses and how this reading helped us look anew at them.

The House on Mango Street - A Class Discussion Part 2

We cover from "Hair" onward in this discussion -- and take a moment to go over what the perfect "house" is (that Esperanza is seeking) in each chapter (for instance, in that second chapter it is her mother's hair that smells of bread).

The House on Mango Street - First Job to Ruth (53 - 77) A Vertext Based Discussion May 6, 2011

As we continue with our discussion of The House on Mango Street - we talk about the chapters from "First Job" to the one about Ruthie - the girl who stays in her room (pages 53-77).  This discussion uses a Vertext - quotes drawn directly from those chapters designed to help initiate discussion from the students.

The House on Mango Street - A Closing Discussion

So much to talk about and so little time.  Above all -- we talk about Esperanza finding her "true home," and the idea that Sally finally gets what she wanted -- which happens to be the same thing that Esperanza wanted -- and it turns out to be another illusion.

The House on Mango Street - An Opening Discussion

In this opening discussion we begin by playing a few songs about house and home.  We then do a very close reading of the first chapter.  It's important to me that the students realize just how much can be found in the very few words of this wonderful novel -- it is often more like a poem than a novel.  We end up by looking at a few "Stephen Booth" moments - the wonderful word textures that are often found in works of genius, such as this.
