"Comin Thro the Rye" lesson for understanding Catcher in the Rye

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a good lesson to introduce before students read chapter 22 of Catcher in the Rye. (This is where Holden and Phoebe discuss the song "Comin thro the Rye".) I display the first handout (the one without a modern translation) on the overhead and have students read and discuss the meaning of the poem in small groups. I encourage them to use dictionaries. This takes about 10 minutes. Then, groups share their interpretations with the class. Interesting results! (Many think the song is about alcohol after looking up the word "rye" in the dictionary.)

Catcher in the Rye Cover Art

Teaching Level:
High School

This is a 73-slide powerpoint of covers for various editions (from around the world) of The Catcher in the Rye. It can be used to spur discussions about themes and/or symbols in the novel. A good follow-up activity would be to have students create their own covers, drawing on their understanding of characters, events, and/or themes.
